Hickmon Law, PC was formed to provide personalized legal services to businesses and individuals in North Carolina and Virginia. Our practice is limited to tax, employee benefits (ERISA), business formation and governance, and complex estate planning and settlement. We feel that it is important to develop personal relationships with each client and encourage open and honest communications to ensure our clients receive the best advice possible.

Our attorneys have provided legal services to a variety of business entities, from closely held family businesses to publicly traded companies. We are particularly experienced in advising corporate executives and business owners regarding compensation, estate planning, and business succession planning. In addition, we represent employers in the implementation and sponsorship of qualified and nonqualified retirement plans, including 401(k), profit sharing, 403(b), 457(f), equity bonus plans, employee stock ownership plans (“ESOPs”), supplemental executive retirement plans (“SERPs”), split-dollar arrangements, and Code Sec. 409A compliance.

Our estate planning and settlement practice provides services tailored to each client’s specific needs. We partner with our clients to determine what plan is appropriate for their given situation, no matter whether the need is as basic as a simple will or incorporates more complex strategies through the use of buy-sell agreements, revocable and irrevocable trusts, credit shelter and martial trusts, or other sophisticated planning techniques. Our clients compliment us on our accessibility. When you call you will talk to an attorney. We attempt to return every phone call and e-mail before the end of each day…even on weekends.

Mediation Services

Mediation is a process in which disputing parties attempt to resolve their dispute without going to trial. Mediation is now mandatory for all Superior Court civil actions filed in North Carolina. Clerks may, if they choose, refer certain types of disputes to mediation, including guardianship and estate matters.

Jim Hickmon has been certified by the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission as a Certified Superior Court mediator. He provides mediation services to parties throughout North Carolina. He will sit down with those involved in legal proceedings to help them discuss their dispute and search for a way to reach a settlement. Mr. Hickmon will work with parties to encourage them to open channels of communication, to inject reason into their discussions, and to help each side see the dispute through the eyes of the other. Mr. Hickmon helps parties come to their own conclusions and agreements on how to resolve their conflicts. If mediation is successful, parties can settle their case short of expensive, protracted litigation or trial.
